IR needs to combat climate change


Workplaces are one of the largest sources of carbon emissions yet Australia has failed to harness the workplace relations system to combat climate change, a new study shows.

The major research project undertaken by Macquarie University's Centre for Workplace Futures (CWF) with the support of the Department of Industry has called for government to take a leading role in encouraging parties to more substantially engage in emissions re-ductions through collective bargaining. It pointed to actions in the university and road transport sectors as a way forward for public policy. The study, one of the first to look at the issue in Australia, found that the UK and Germany were leading the way internationally in dealing with climate change through collective bar-gaining and employee representatives
