Profile

Dr Rahat Munir is an Associate Professor, Interim Head of Department and Chair of Quality Assurance Committee in the Department of Accounting and Corporate Governance. 

He has been an academic in accounting and banking disciplines for over 25 years. His teaching is across undergraduate and postgraduate subjects in management accounting and related subjects. He also supervises honours and PhD students. Over the last decade, he has worked on various projects, including projects funded by the International Finance Corporation, the World Bank and the NSW Attorney General Department.

His research interests range from management accounting systems, performance measurement systems, corporate governance, management control systems, banking systems in emerging markets and SMEs. He has published in leading international journals including Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal, International Journal of Production and Operations Management as well as presented at international conferences and seminars in many parts of the world. He is affiliated with several professional bodies including Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand, Professional Risk Managers International Association, USA and European Accounting Association. Associate Professor Rahat Munir is actively involved in learning & teaching and research activities of the Department and brings a host of administrative and service experience across a wide range of contexts. His main contributions include the development ACCG315 (Accountants in the Profession) professional and community engagement unit for the Bachelor of Commerce professional accounting students, FOBE800 (Contemporary Business Issues) a capstone unit for the Mater of Commerce students, review and structuring of postgraduate programs to comply with new AQF and TEQSA requirements and the development of Professional Career Skills program in collaboration with Performance Education. He has actively been involved in developing collaborations between Macquarie University and Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (Malaysia), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (UK) and TAFE (NSW) for under/postgraduate & associate degrees. Besides these collaborations, he has also mapped various under/postgraduate degrees of various universities, including universities in Canada, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, China and Singapore for articulation into Macquarie University programs. 

He serves on the various committees of the University, Faculty and the Department, including the Academic Standards and Quality Committee (ASQC), Faculty Standards and Quality Committee (FSQC), the Faculty Board and the Research Committee of the Faculty. Dr Munir also serves on the TAFE NSW Higher Education Academic Board. 

Dr Munir has earned numerous national and international level research and teaching awards during his career, including – "2015 VC's Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning" and "2013 VC's Award for Programs that Enhance Learning" at the University level and at the Faculty through the "2012 Dean's Teaching Excellence". His teaching contributions has also been recognised at the national level through awarding "2015 NSW Division President's Award for Excellence – Achievement in Academia" by CPA Australia, and "2014 Business/Higher Education Roundtable (B/HERT) Award for Excellence in Accounting Teaching Collaboration". Dr Munir's contribution has also been recognised at the international level through shortlisting of ACCG315 for the Wharton-QS Stars Reimagine Education Award 2015 at the University of Pennsylvania in the Nurturing Employability Award category for the most innovative pedagogical approach to learning and teaching. Associate Professor Rahat Munir also served as Undergraduate Program Director of the Department of Accounting and Corporate Governance (2011-2014) and the Faculty's Program Director (Master of Commerce) in 2013-2014.
