Profile
Academic and Professional Background
Nick McGuigan is a lecturer in accounting. Prior to joining Macquarie University Nick taught accounting in the New Zealand tertiary sector for the past ten years. He is directly involved in applied research focusing on the enhancement of educational and training programmes of accountants. His research interests include the integration of graduate attributes within the accounting curriculum, student conceptions of and learning approaches towards accounting and innovative teaching practice. Such interests have led to the awarding of competitive research grant funding, including a recent Australian Federal Government Office of Learning and Teaching grant. He has published in international accounting and education journals, presented at numerous conferences and been invited to present to professional accounting bodies in Australia and New Zealand. Nick currently leads the Department of Accounting and Corporate Governance, Accounting Education and Innovation Research Group. He has also published in the field of sustainable development and disclosures of financial institutions with particular emphasis on socially responsible lending practice of banking institutions.
Nick has taught in the areas of financial accounting, management accounting, applied research methods, introductory accounting and personal finance. He has received teaching excellence through being in the Top 10% of University Lecturers in the years 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010 at his previous University. He received a 2012 Accounting and Corporate Governance Teaching Award and has been invited to present on innovative teaching design, learning management systems and engaging first year university students. He has been a visiting lecturer at the University of the West of England and Saarlandes University, Germany. His teaching interests include supervision of research students, financial accounting, accounting theory, corporate social responsibility and introductory accounting. He is currently the Unit Convener for ACCG 399: Accounting in Context. Nick is an active member of both educational and professional accounting associations including HERDSA, EARLI, DEANZ, AFAANZ, EAA and AAA.

Developing an intelligent tutoring system to enhance the delivery of cash flow statements in UC's introductory accounting programme". Grant amount $NZ18,000. This research is a joint collaboration between College of Engineering, Business and Economics University of Canterbury (New Zealand) and Macquarie University.
- July 2012 - Project team member for an Office of Learning and Teaching (OLT) Strategic Project Competitive Grant for "Academic integrity in Australia - understanding and changing culture and practice". Grant amount $AU227,000. This research is a joint collaboration between Macquarie University, the University of Sydney, the Australian Catholic University, and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey (USA).
- December 2011 - Project team member for an ICAA 2012 Research Grant entitled "Scaffolding the development of judgement skills in accounting programmes". Grant Amount $AU 10,000. - December 2011 - Project team member for an International Governance and Performance (IGAP) and CPA research grant entitled "Exploration of the Notion of Work Readiness". The aim of this study is to explore the concept of 'work ready' in both relevant and non-relevant degrees held by candidates in the professional examination programs of CPA Australia and ICAA. Grant amount $AU 4,156.
- November 2009 - Sponsorship funds for 8th Australasian Conference on Social and Environmental Accounting Research (CSEAR) received from Environment Canterbury. Sponsorship amount $NZ 6,000.
- November 2008 - Project leader for an AKO Aotearoa (National Centre for Tertiary Teaching Excellence) Good Practice Publication Grant awarded. This was written to publish the innovative practice of cell phone use within the traditional tertiary classroom. Grant amount $NZ 3,000.
- July 2007 - Project team member for an eCDF (New Zealand government funded) grant to construct and evaluate an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) for an introductory accountancy course (software development). This was undertaken under the Intelligent Computer Tutoring Group (ICTG), University of Canterbury. Grant amount $NZ 120,000.
