An academic who applies New Institutional Economics theory to Internet law issues, John Selby practiced as a lawyer at Mallesons Stephen Jaques for three years prior to joining Macquarie University's Division of Law in 2002.

Research Grants:

Appointed in 2011 by the Australian Research Council as a Grant Assessor on the basis of him being an "expert of international standing in his field", John has been a member of research teams awarded over $360 000 in funding through two ARC LIEF research grants.

In 2006, John was awarded a $20 000 competitive research grant by the auDA Foundation.

External Research Appointments and Awards:

In 2009, the Postel Center at the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute appointed John as a visiting research scholar.

In 2006, the Lowy Institute recognised John as one of Australia's "New Voices in Technology and International Relations".

John is a peer reviewer for scholarly articles submitted to the IEEE Security and Privacy Magazine and the Melbourne Journal of International Law.

Research Publications and Conference Presentations:

John has published three book chapters, sixteen journal articles and an invited book review. His work has been cited by scholars at least fourteen times across various disciplines and his two articles available on SSRN have been downloaded over 450 times. He has presented his research at numerous conferences both in Australia and around the world. A reviewer of his book chapter on intellectual property and trade stated that it was, “a useful addition [to the 2nd edition of the book] and its inclusion reflects the ever increasing relevance of intellectual property to international trade and business law”.

Applying research in society:

John's four policy submissions have influenced the outcomes of federal government and industry regulator reviews, including the DCITA review of the .au domain name industry and auDA policy panel reviews.

Media coverage of his research:

John has been interviewed and quoted on various Internet law issues by numerous media sources including: the Australian Financial Review, Sydney Morning Herald, Crikey, Sydney Sunday Telegraph, Brisbane Times, and the "Hack" current affairs program on Triple J Radio.

PhD Supervision:

John was the Associate Supervisor for a candidate awarded his PhD in Law at Macquarie University in 2010. He has also recruited several of his former students to undertake PhD candidatures.

Research into Teaching and Learning:

Having received several Macquarie University grants for research into diagnostic assessment techniques and improving student learning through delivering customised assessment feedback reports to students via electronic means, John has developed and implemented a software tool which has received significant student approval, some citing it as "the best feedback I've ever received", and reduced course delivery costs to an extent which exceeded its development costs.

Guest Lecturing:

John is a sought after guest lecturer, having delivered lectures and training seminars to students enrolled in law courses at Sydney University; Notre Dame University, London; Notre Dame University, New Orleans; Meiji Gakuin University, Tokyo; University of Bonn, Germany, and University of Ghent, Belgium.

Teaching Responsibilities

John has successfully convened and/or delivered to postgraduate and undergraduate students a variety of law courses, including:

  • Electronic Commerce Law
  • coaching the Macquarie University team to the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot team (ranked 5th in the world in the 2006 moot);
  • Tax;
  • Contracts;
  • Torts;
  • International Commercial Arbitration;
  • Business Dispute Resolution;
  • Law in Australian Society (an introductory law subject)

In 2011, John is convening two courses: Law in Australian Society (an introductory law subject) and Business Dispute Resolution (a subject focused on the various means (including litigation, negotiation and ADR) through which commercial legal disputes are solved).
