Profile

Stephen studied natural sciences at King’s College, London and Oxford University, and worked in a number of R&D, IT and management consultancy posts in industry before becoming a management academic.  He holds an MBA from the Cranfield School of Management and a PhD in Management from the Imperial College, London. Previously he has taught at Henley Management College, the Open Business School (UK), City University Business School (now Cass Business School), Manchester Business School, the Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA and most recently the Australian National University, where among other responsibilities, he held posts as Director of the Master in International Management in Mandarin Program and Director of Research at the National Graduate School of Management.

Stephen teaches mainly in the areas of strategic management and international business strategy. He has a particular interest in the effects of disruptive technologies and market globalization on industries and firms. His textbook on Strategic Management of E-business (published by Wiley & Sons) is used in several universities worldwide and is now in its second edition. A Chinese language edition was published in 2006 by Peking University Press. His current research interests include the effects of industry and market globalization, internationalization strategies of firms, international business ethics, non-profit maximization in strategic decision-making, competitive strategies of technology-based firms, e-business models and technology entrepreneurship.
