Special Approvals

Waivers, Dean of Faculty Approval & Enrol After Twice Fail

Waivers are used when a student's academic progression is held up by a technicality, changed pre-requisite or co-requisite for a unit. Departments in general do NOT to approve waivers as pre-requisites and co-requisites are deemed to be necessary for the successful completion of the unit.

Executive Dean of Faculty Approval is required for some special units such as research projects.

Enrol After Twice Fail is required for all students wanting to enrol in a unit for a third (or subsequent) time after they have attempted but failed the unit twice.  

Special Approval is a privilege NOT a right. If an application is not approved there is no appeal process for Waivers nor Dean of Faculty Approval, however students may appeal to the Academic Appeals Committee if they are not allowed to enrol in a unit for the third (or subsequent) time. Students considering to appeal should be aware there is a close date and make an appointment to discuss with Student Advocacy and Support Services. How to apply for Special Approval:

Special Approval applications must be submitted online via

Session 2, 2016

Applications will be accepted within the following dates:

  • Open: Now.
  • Close: 11/08/16 at 5 pm (Internal Units) and 04/08/16 at 5 pm (External Units) - Applications submitted after this date will be rejected.

Please note that applications should be submitted by the 10/08/16 (Internal units) and 03/08/16 (External unit) as anything submitted after that is not guaranteed to be processed by the time enrollment closes.

Applications for Session 2 2016  will not be assessed until after final results are released for Session 1, 2016.


If you are applying for BUS880, FOBE200, FOBE201, FOBE300 and/or FOBE310, there is a separate application procedure, please refer to the Application Process.

Submitting after these dates will mean your applications may not be reviewed and processed on time before enrollment closes.


  • Click on this link and log on using your OneID.
  • Indicate the type of Special Approval you are seeking for - Prerequisite Waiver, Enrol After Twice Fail or Executive Dean of Faculty Approval.
  • Next, follow the necessary prompts and fill out all of the necessary information for the application including for which session you are applying for and why you should be granted the special approval. Once you have completed filling out the information, please click on 'Submit'.
  • Once you have submitted your application, you will receive an automated receipt email in your Macquarie University student emails.


The processing time for these applications will be 7-10 working days. Students can check the outcome of their requests on, eStudent and student emails.

Accounting and Corporate Governance:

NOTE: If you are applying for internal units, you must submit your applications by 7th of March 2013. Meanwhile, if you are applying for external units, you must submit your applications by 28th of February 2013.

All other Departments:

Applications are processed as they are submitted by a Special Approval committee in each department according to their rules. The speed of processing depends on the workload and priorities of the committee members. If Special Approval is granted then the student must enrol in the unit themselves.
