Brief overview
The Department of Accounting and Finance provides some of Australia’s leading undergraduate and postgraduate accounting programs.
Graduates earn starting salaries among the highest in the country and go on to forge careers in industry and commerce, where they assume financial, accounting, informational and management roles, professional practice, audit and assurance services, management consulting and taxation, government, and the finance industry, including merchant banking, financial risk analysis and advising and portfolio management.

The Department of Actuarial Studies has been successfully delivering quality actuarial programs for over 30 years and has been chosen by the Institute of Actuaries of Australia as a Centre of Excellence and its preferred supplier of the distance education Part II professional qualification subjects.
Graduates from the Actuarial Department at Macquarie are globally employed in a diverse range of fields across Australia, Europe, North America, and Asia. Applying mathematical, statistical, economic and financial analysis to a wide range of risk management and business problems and opportunities, actuaries find well-paid careers in all major areas of actuarial work, including superannuation, finance, life insurance, general insurance and investment across a huge range of industries.
Completing Actuarial studies offers students a range of choices within structured programs of accredited study with actuarial skills as a foundation. Students can then either continue to specialise in this core discipline, or branch out to pursue a major in accounting, applied finance, business law, computing, demography, econometrics, marketing, mathematics or statistics. Double degree programs allow students to combine their actuarial studies program with law, finance, statistics, mathematics, economics or computing.

The Department of Business, in the Faculty of Business and Economics, encompasses the fields of marketing, business administration, human resource management and demographics. Academic members of our staff specialise in one or more of these disciplines. This diversity makes us unique, and allows us to offer units in a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs .
The study of business provides a broad and comprehensive preparation for a career in business management. Our programs cover the range of skills needed by modern managers such as economics, finance, marketing, IT, human resources, accounting, business law, strategic management, organisational behaviour, statistics and a choice of electives.
Our specialist programs including Bachelor’s degrees in Business Administration, International Business, Marketing and Human Resource Management provide the skills required for graduates in these professional disciplines. In many cases, students can also combine their studies with other degrees such as Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Applied Finance for even wider options.
At the postgraduate level we offer the coursework programs Master of Commerce in Marketing and deliver units in many other postgraduate programs, We also offer postgraduate research degrees such Master of Commerce/Master of Economics (Honours) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

The great majority of students taking units from within the Department of Business Law, in the Faculty of Business and Economics, do so as part of their education towards a professional career. A specialisation in BUSL250 Business Law, BUSL301 Corporations Law and BUSL320 Revenue Law leads to recognition by the professional accounting bodies when taken as part of the professional accounting sequence. These qualifying units cover basic legal concepts and techniques, commercial law, company law and revenue law. Other study opportunities are also available, either instead of or in addition to business law study for accounting purposes. These include a business law major.

- Brief Overview:
The Department of Economics at Macquarie University is one of the largest economics schools in Australia, and is highly respected within the industry.
The study of Economics opens the door to a wide choice of general management and specialised careers such as policy analysis and research, public administration, financial planning, stockbroking, urban planning, portfolio management, diplomatic service, international trade analysis, management consulting and financial journalism.

- Brief Overview
The Centre for Applied Finance was established in 1980 and delivers the world's largest Master's Program in Applied Finance (MAF).
The MAF program provides graduates with foundational skills in applied finance as well as the potential to specialise in corporate finance, financial risk management, funds management or treasury. This qualification is truly portable and is available in Beijing, Singapore, Tokyo and a number of Australian cities.
Students can start the program in Sydney and, if necessary, finish in, say, Beijing or Singapore.
The program is taught by staff who have both excellent education qualifications and substantial industry experience. Accreditation from professional bodies such as the Australasian Institute of Banking and Finance, The Finance and Treasury Association Limited, the Australian Society of Certified Practicing Accountants and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission attest to the quality of the program.
The Centre’s PhD program in Applied Finance is closely linked with an active research agenda and PhD scholarships are available.

The Centre for Japanese Economic Studies is an independent research unit located in the Faculty of Business and Economics at Macquarie University. It encourages research and study of the dynamic Japanese economy through scholarly exchange and analysis, regular public events and formal course offerings..
The centre was established in 1991 by the late Professor Victor Argy with the assistance of a generous donation from Nomura Securities, Tokyo.
The Centre's Biennial Conferences draw together world-renowned scholars to discuss pressing issues regarding the Japanese economy. Regular seminars yield CJES Research Papers that reach a worldwide audience of researchers and institutions. Public outreach programs include luncheons, media interviews and testimony before parliamentary committees.
Through the promotion of innovative new degree programs, the Centre enables students to develop specialised skills that combine the best of business and language skills with an in-depth and practical knowledge of the Japanese economy, institutions and social structure.
The Faculty of Business and Economics, with the Macquarie Graduate School of Management also sponsor the Labour-Management Studies Foundation (LMSF).

The Labour-Management Studies Foundation (LMSF) was established by Macquarie University's Council in 1983. It is is jointly hosted by the Faculty of Business and Economics and the Macquarie Graduate School of Management.
Its primary goal, contributing to a higher level of understanding of industrial relations and human resource management issues is accomplished through teaching and research and the dissemination of ideas through publications, lectures, seminars and conferences.
The Foundation hosts Australia's largest women's management and employment relations conference annually, the Women, Management and Employment Relations (WMER) conference. The LMSF website has all the details and registration form.
