Commencement Week is a great opportunity to meet students and staff in an informal, friendly environment. All new Candidates need to attend these workshops. Current HDR students and supervisors are also welcome to attend.

Research Candidate Essentials

This session will cover essential information for your success as a research student:
- HDR candidate responsibilities
- key steps and milestones in the research process,
- support available: funding, training and services
- thesis by publication
This session will enable you to find out more about the thesis by publication policy, and what it means for students and supervisors. The structure of the thesis will also be discussed.
This is a compulsory event for those who started in 2010 and those who started in 2009 but did not attend the 2009 Commencement Week. Lunch will be provided.

Take advantage of this discipline focussed session to ask about resources particular to your research interests.
This library training session will introduce you to the Library website to help you to find appropriate resources through the Catalogue and Journal Finder, and how to use Databases and Research Guides to find appropriate information resources. Also the bibliographic software available through the Library, Endnote and Refworks, will be briefly introduced.

Being Your Own Boss and Surviving Your Thesis

Presented by Dr Juliet Lum and Faculty staffBeing a research student is different from other occupations you may have mastered: being a coursework student, working in industry, managing a household. It’s more like managing your own business or a large-scale project. This workshop will highlight what you can do at the start of your research degree to set up your ‘new business’, optimise the use of your time, transform obstacles into opportunities, and reach your goals in a practical and professional way.
Come and listen to advice from people who have completed or are about to complete their thesis, as well as supervisors who have guided students to a successful completion of their project.
