English Requirements

All classes at Macquarie University are taught in English and students need to be competent in both spoken and written English. Students from a non-English speaking background are required to demonstrate proficiency in English prior to commencement of postgraduate study.

English language proficiency can be demonstrated by one of the following:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS). An overall score of at least 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each part.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - paper based. An overall score of at least 580 with a minimum of 53 in Listening Comprehension, 51 in Structure and Written Expression, 52 in Reading Comprehension and a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 5.0.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - computer based. An overall score of at least 237 with a minimum of 19 in Listening Comprehension, 19 in Structure and Written Expression, 19 in Reading Comprehension and a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 5.0.

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - internet based. An overall score of at least 92 with a minimum of 22 in speaking, 18 in listening, 22 in writing and 17 in reading.

  • Cambridge English Test (CET). A grade of B in advanced English.

  • Business Preparation Program (BPP). Satisfactory completion of the BPP (which is a direct entry English program) at Macquarie University's National Centre for English Language Teaching and Research (NCELTR).

These English language requirements apply to the following postgraduate degrees:

  • Master of International Business
  • MCom in Accounting and Finance
  • MCom in Actuarial Studies
  • MCom in Business
  • MCom in Information Systems and Technology
  • MCom in Marketing

Students who need to improve their English language skills can do so at Macquarie University's National Centre for English Language Teaching and Research (NCELTR). NCELTR offers a wide range of English courses and can advise on the course most suitable for each individual student.
