Career service dedicated to you
The Faculty of Business and Economics now has two dedicated staff (hyperlink to staff profiles below) from the Career Service to support your specific career development needs. We also offer students:
- Skills Workshops - The Career Service runs loads of workshops on resumes, interview preparation and online applications. We even invite employers to run some of these sessions to give you essential tips.
- Career Events - The Careers Service runs a Work Experience Expo, a Graduate Recruitment Fair and other department-specific programs such as Kick-start Your Career in Accounting, Careers in Marketing and Careers in Finance.
- CareerHub - we work with a range of employers who advertise their work experience and job vacancies on this site. You can also use CareerHub to register for workshops and events.
- Career Consultations - You can make an appointment to discuss your career plans by speaking to one of our Career Development Officers (profiles below).
Staff Profiles
Cherag Kalapesi
Career Development Officer
Cherag Kalapesi completed his Bachelor of Economics at Macquarie University in 1996 and is an Associate of the Institute of Actuaries. He spent the early part of his career working for AMP and PwC in actuarial roles working in a variety of areas that developed his knowledge of superannuation, investment and management consultancy. In a move that surprised both family and friends he then joined a specialist financial services recruitment consultancy and worked as a recruiter for the best part of eight years. In this role he was responsible for attracting talent to many of the world's leading banking, funds management and insurance organisations. He developed an intimate understanding of the recruitment process and helped hundreds of finance professionals take the next step in their careers. Since 2010 he has worked as a careers adviser at Oxford University, Sydney University and now at Macquarie University where he enjoys helping students develop career goals and coaching them to maximise their performance during the recruitment process.
Melinda Varhegyi
Career Development Office
Melinda completed a PhD examining the career intentions of university students across a number of Australian universities. She comes from a strong psychological background, represented by an honours in psychology and a masters in organisational psychology. Melinda is a registered psychologist and currently working towards full membership of the college of organisational psychology. Her professional experience spans across a range of industries including management consulting, human resource management and career counselling. In a career counselling capacity, Melinda has worked with staff and students at the University of New South Wales to overcome various challenges that face students and staff at various stages of their careers. Melinda’s experience coupled with her PhD findings provides her with a thorough understanding about the factors impacting upon career development in the student population. As a casual lecturer in the department of marketing and management, Melinda has a solid understanding about various business programs and engages actively in careers focussed research. She is passionate to help students overcome career obstacles and increase their confidence with the job application and interview process.
