Visiting Academic: Professor Xiaoqiang Cai

Prof. Xiaoqiang Cai is Professor and Head of Graduate Division of the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (SEEM) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and the Director of the Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Optimization at CUHK.

Prof. Cai received his B.Eng. degree from the Harbin Shipbuilding Engineering Institute in 1982 and his M.Eng. and D.Eng. degrees from Tsinghua University in 1985 and 1988 respectively. During 1989-91, he conducted postdoctoral research at The University of Cambridge and The Queen's University of Belfast. He was Lecturer at The University of Western Australia in 1991-1992, before joining CUHK in 1993. He served as the Head of Department of SEEM during 1996-2003, and has been Professor since October 2000.

Prof. Cai has his current research focused on scheduling models and algorithms, logistics management, network optimization, and portfolio optimization. He has published extensively in leading journals in these areas, including Operations Research, Management Science, Naval Research Logistics, IIE Transactions, and IEEE Transactions, with 96 journal articles and 13 books or book chapters. He has been highly successful in winning research grants, with over 20 competitive research grants from the governments of China and Hong Kong, as well as other industrial and research organisations.

Prof. Cai won the Outstanding Young Scientist Award (Overseas Category, 2004) from the prestigious National Science Foundation of China. He has served on the editorial boards of several international journals, including IIE Transactions on Scheduling and Logistics, Journal of Scheduling, and Journal of Industrial and Management Optimization.

Prof. Cai has extensive experience and provided strong leadership in establishing and managing post-graduate programs. As the Head of Graduate Division of SEEM, he is leading the new HK PhD Fellowship scheme, the self-funded MSc programs, the E-Commerce program in Hong Kong, and the CUHK-Tsinghua joint EMSc Program in Logistics and Supply Chain Management offered in Mainland China.
