Our success continues in the Deloitte FASTRACK Innovation Challenge!

This session, our Business and Economics students entered the Deloitte FASTRACK Innovation Challenge as part of the unit, Student Leadership in Community Engagement (FOBE300), and as always the competition was fierce, with the quality of the innovative ideas amazingly high.

This is the third year that Macquarie has participated in this inter university competition.

Unit Convenor, Dr. Leanne Carter and Faculty of Business and Economics Participation Manager, Diana Caruso ensured our students were prepared for the Challenge. This was especially evident as 2 of our teams were successful in being chosen to compete in the Deloitte FASTRACK Innovation Challenge Grand Final on Tuesday 30th October.

Our undergraduate teams, IVward and Mac-10, participated in the Grand Final. They were up against 4 teams from the University of Sydney, all of whom were Master's students!

Up for grabs was a $5000 cash prize and the FASTRACK Innovation Challenge Champion title!

Our teams delivered strong presentations with the judging panel having high expectations of each team.

The panel consisted of:

  • Ben Shields, Partner in Consulting at Deloitte Australia
  • Stuart Osborne, Partner in Tax at Deloitte Australia
  • Nuria Ruiperez, Director of Innovation at Deloitte Australia

The criteria by which each team was judged, included:

  • Evidence of market need
  • Novelty of concept/solution
  • Disruptive potential/size of market opportunity
  • Clear and persuasive communication
  • Broad relevance to Deloitte, its clients or Australia

Each team was commended on the strength of their presentations, which incorporated role plays, videos and slides detailing their innovative idea.

The winner is…

The room then waited in anticipation as the winner was announced! To the delight of the audience, Macquarie University coordinators and students – our team, Mac-10, were declared the winners!

2nd and 3rd place were awarded to the University of Sydney teams, Finnium and Team Connect.

Mac-10’'  idea Delight Fit centred around a solution for online retailers.

Team Mac-10 included:

  • Marc Harrold (Bachelor of Business Administration with Bachelor of Arts – Psychology)
  • Jennifer Sutoji-Jie (Bachelor of Commerce - Professional Accounting)
  • Carolyn Yuan (Bachelor of Commerce - Professional Accounting)

and their Deloitte team, Himanshini Weeraratne and Eric Cheung. 

Eric Cheung, Team Mac-10's coach, is a Macquarie University alumni and he spoke of his pride following his team's win.

"To have been able to watch the students' grow their idea into a multi-million dollar solution that Deloitte views as having the most potential was an exhilarating experience for both myself and the students.
I feel so privileged to have been able to contribute to the students' understanding of the innovation process as well as their understanding of higher level business decisions."

Eric also mentioned how much he learnt from the experience as a team coach.

"My students inspired me with their enthusiasm and creativity and I feel honoured to have been able to share in their achievement."

Dr. Carter has been involved with the challenge since its inception and talks about the benefits it has for the students involved.

"The partnership with Deloitte has proven to be hugely beneficial to our students. They gain unique consulting experience, and are able to see theory applied in practice using the knowledge and skills learned at university in a real world setting.
In addition, the opportunity for networking is invaluable. The Challenge is a unique experience that adds value to their degrees and employability."
