Creating Connections

Internships can be a primary stepping stone to launching a career. They provide the University the opportunity to connect with business leaders, allow for students to gain real industry experience and offer businesses the chance to work with the up and coming stars of tomorrow.

The faculty has a long history of partnering its best and brightest students with a variety of businesses – and the success stories from all involved are plentiful.

In 2010, Nick Saisanas (a former Macquarie University alumnus) the Marketing Communications Manager, Australia & New Zealand for TomTom approached the faculty with the intention of securing a Macquarie University student for a paid marketing internship.

Following the successful placement of Liz Lenert with the company, Nick has once again approached the faculty with the aim of securing another talented business student intern for a 12 month placement.

The success of building long term relationships with leading industry partners centres around the fostering and nurturing of linkages with former faculty alumni. As Professor Lucy Taksa, Head of Marketing and Management describes, "Internships are critically important in supporting the faculty's mission of reputation and resilience and have been extremely valuable in improving the department's profile with a range of businesses."

For students, like Liz, the internship opportunity was not only the chance to receive mentoring and experience from world class business leaders but also the chance to "put theory into action."
