Profile

Toomas' financial services industry experience spans principally financial credits denominated in foreign currencies and credit analysis, in international, commercial, and corporate banking - both overseas and in Australia. He is a Senior Fellow (SF Fin) of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (FINSIA).

His association with Macquarie University began in early 2001 as a sessional tutor in finance.

In the period 2011 to 2013 Toomas was the Department of Applied Finance and Actuarial Studies (AFAS) representative on the Faculty of Business and Economics Learning and Teaching Committee. In 2012 and 2013, he represented the Faculty Learning and Teaching Committee on the Macquarie University Participation and Community Engagement (PACE) Advisory Committee. 

Since 2012 he is an academic mentor for first year students in the Faculty's First STEP Mentoring Program. Toomas is also an academic peer mentor on the Macquarie University Spectrum Approach to Mentoring team. He is an Associate Fellow (AF HERDSA) of the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (HERDSA). 

Toomas' current research is on "Irving Fisher's Conception of Interest". He also publishes on learning and teaching practices in higher education, and is an occasional manuscript referee for the peer-reviewed journal Studies in Higher Education.

    $9,990 for "Communicative competence in students' learning experiences in Applied Corporate Finance" with Dr Ed Watts (Department of Applied Finance and Actuarial Studies-AFAS) and Mrs Rhian Webb (Office of the PVC Social Inclusion).

Current projects

Evolution of Ideas in Economic & Finance Thought

Research program aim: evaluate Fisher's theory of interest in its evolutionary context. Key words: History of Economic & Finance Thought; Irving Fisher; Conception of Interest.

Final-Year Finance Lingua Franca Proficiency

Research aim: provide new evidence on the impact of final-year finance students proficiency in lingua franca (or business English) proficiency on analytical and evaluative reasoning in writing a business report. 

Attaining Threshold Concepts: Implementing Variation Theory of Learning in First-year Finance

Research aim: provide new evidence on the impact of attaining threshold concepts by renewal in curriculum and pedagogy, in a first-year finance unit with a very large and diverse enrolment, and a high fail rate, tutored by a high number of sessional staff.
