- Thesis title: Indigenous poverty and policy approaches in urban NSW
- Abstract: The aim of my thesis is to examine the degree and causes of Indigenous poverty in NSW major cities and the efficacy of current policy approaches to improving Indigenous welfare. Indicators of Indigenous disadvantage developed by the Productivity Commission (2002), are utilised to measure the extent of relative Indigenous poverty in urban NSW, using 2002 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Survey (NATSISS) data and 2002 General Social Survey (GSS) data. A simultaneous equations model of the theoretical causes of this disadvantage is estimated using NATSISS data. The results inform a critical assessment of current Indigenous welfare policies.
