Professor Ray Markey was hosted at the University of Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) from 14-18 October 2014 as a guest of Professor Bala Parasuranman, a former of PhD student of Professor Markey. Professor Parasuraman is now Professor of HR and Industrial Relations and a member of the Technical Committee of the National Wages Consultative Council. During his visit, Professor Markey delivered 2 lectures and a seminar on the Competitive Advantage of HR, and spoke with the DVC Research & Development, the Dean of the Graduate School of Entrepreneurship and Business in Kuala Lumpur, and the Dean of the Faculty of of Entrepreneurship and Business in Kota Bharu. Professor Markey also met with the Technical Committee of the National Wages Consultative Council as it deliberated a new minimum wage setting in Kuala Lumpur, with assistance from the ILO and ASEAN officials.
A number of possibilities for research collaboration and staff and student exchanges are now being followed up in Macquarie and UMK. Research collaboration is especially likely in the areas of employee voice/participation, trade unionism and the impact of minimum wages. Professor Markey plans to host a visit by Professor Bala Paraasuranman to Macquarie under its VISA scheme in 2015, and UMK plans to bring Prof. Markey back to Malaysia to continue collaboration in the near future, including at its regional campus in Sarawak, where members of the State legislature discussed support for further collaboration with Professor Markey.
