Actuarial Scholarships

The Laurie Schalchlin Memorial Actuarial Scholarship

The Department of Applied Finance and Actuarial Studies offers a scholarship in memory of Laurie Schalchlin, who was a long-term employee of the department.


This scholarship is tenable for one year. Students who have held the scholarship previously may re-apply.

The scholarship is valued at $2,500.


  • Applicants must be permanent residents of Australia
  • Applicants must be enrolled full time in or intending to enrol in a course at Macquarie University leading to the award of a bachelor degree with a major in Actuarial Studies.
  • Applicants may not hold any other scholarship or award concurrently with the scholarship, other than the Youth Allowance.

Award of the Scholarships

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit, financial need and personal circumstances of the applicant. No award will be made in any year in which it is considered there is no eligible applicant of sufficient merit.

NOTE: The successful applicant must notify the Department of Applied Finance and Actuarial Studies immediately or as soon as practicable of any change in their circumstances as they relate to the eligibility criteria.

Selection Process

The scholarship are awarded by the University on the recommendation of a Committee comprising the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, the Head of the Department Applied Finance and Actuarial Studies and a nominee from the Faculty of Business and Economics.


Applications for the 2018 scholarship, along with any supporting material, must be submitted by Monday 26 March 2018.

Also attach copies of any academic record.

  • Financial Need

Please provide details of your current financial position, any income you are receiving from employment or any other source and tell us why you think the award of the Scholarship is merited in your case. Please ensure that you attach documentation supporting any claims of financial need and that you provide enough information to allow an accurate assessment to be made.

  • Personal Circumstances

Provide information about yourself to illustrate why the Selection Committee should choose you for the Scholarship.
